Things to Do in Corpus Christi with Kids (That They'll Actually Remember)
Casita Rentals started, in a real sense, because of a kid — our daughter Andrea, who moved to Corpus Christi for college and needed a home, not just a place to stay. So when families arrive at our casitas with children in tow, it feels right. This is a family city. It has been from the start.
Corpus Christi does a lot of things well for families. The beaches are gentle enough for small children. The major attractions are excellent — not in a generic way, but in the way where adults check their watches and realize they've been there three hours. And you're never more than 20 minutes from something worth doing.
Texas State Aquarium
The Texas State Aquarium is one of the best in the country — the consistent verdict of anyone who's been. The sea turtle rehabilitation program is active and visible, and the outdoor otter habitat has a way of stopping adults in their tracks for longer than they expected.
Plan for a half-day minimum. Buy tickets online in advance, especially in summer. It's at North Beach, which means you can pair it with time on the water afterward.
USS Lexington Museum
A World War II-era aircraft carrier moored permanently at North Beach. The flight simulators are a hit. The overnight camp program (sleeping aboard) is one of the more memorable things you can do in Corpus Christi if you're there for more than a night.
It pairs naturally with the Aquarium since both are at North Beach. Do both in a single morning, eat lunch at the waterfront, and you've filled a full day without moving the car. usslexington.com →
Padre Island National Seashore — Sea Turtle Season
Between June and August, Padre Island National Seashore holds public sea turtle hatchling releases that children don't forget. Kemp's ridley sea turtles are among the most endangered species in the world. The park releases hatchlings directly onto the beach and into the Gulf. It's free, it happens in the morning, and the National Park Service posts release times online.
This is the single thing we recommend most enthusiastically to families visiting in summer. Build a beach day around it.
South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center
The South Texas Botanical Gardens are particularly good for families with kids past the beach-running stage. The butterfly house is the highlight — it's enclosed, the butterflies land on you, and children who walk in skeptical tend to walk out converted. Also peaceful after a few days of beach energy. About 7 minutes from the casita.
Downtown Marina Arts District
Worth building into an evening, especially with older kids who can wander. The Downtown Marina Arts District has coffee shops, galleries, street murals, and a bayfront that's walkable and lively. McGee Beach is right there if the kids need water at the end of it.
The best evenings there start without a plan — some food, some art on a wall someone stops to look at, the bay at dusk.
North Beach — For the Youngest Ones
For families with very young children, North Beach is the right call. The waves are gentle, the water is warm through most of the year, and you're never far from facilities. Parking is free and easy on weekday mornings.=
Local Farmers Markets
Worth checking the schedule for — Grow Local South Texas lists current markets around the city. Fresh produce and local makers, usually with live music somewhere nearby. A good slow morning with kids who need to move around somewhere that isn't a beach.
Our casitas are well set up for families — three bedrooms, private yard, full kitchen.
