One Perfect Weekend in Corpus Christi: A Local's Itinerary
We started Casita Rentals because we bought a house in Corpus Christi for our daughter. We weren't trying to disrupt the hotel industry. But after years of hosting guests and hearing what they say when they arrive — and when they leave — we've developed a strong opinion about the difference between a hotel stay and a good vacation rental. They're not the same trip.
Hotels do some things exceptionally well. But in Corpus Christi specifically — a city where the whole point is slowing down, cooking fresh Gulf shrimp, and sitting outside in the evening — a hotel room puts you at a structural disadvantage before you've even unpacked.
Friday: Arrive, Unpack, Exhale
Get here before 4 pm if you can. Check in, put things where they belong, and then do nothing for 30 minutes. The Gulf is not going anywhere.
Once you've decompressed, walk to the water. The casita is one block from the Gulf — five minutes on foot, not in a car. Go at that golden hour before dinner, when the light is warm, and the boats are coming in. Bring nothing.
Dinner Friday is at Water Street Oyster Bar. Get the oysters. Order more oysters. The kitchen at the casita is there all weekend — Friday night is not the night to use it.
Abby, who stayed a full month, put it this way in the guest book: "You thought of everything! There are so many extras to this place that make it cozy and inviting." Shane and Paige, who came for a weekend with their dog Milo, wrote: "It was our PERFECT home away from home." Two different trips, same reaction. That's what we're going for.
Saturday: The Full Day
Up early. Make coffee in the casita, or walk two minutes to Coffee Waves and let someone else handle it. Be at North Beach by 7am. The water is calm, the light is flat and good, and the city hasn't started yet.
Mid-morning, decide who you're traveling with. Families: the Texas State Aquarium is the move — give it three hours minimum. Fishing parties: first charter morning. Couples or a group of adults: drive to Padre Island, walk south until the crowds thin, and stay as long as the sun cooperates.
Lunch on your way back — Ridley's On the Island is right on the route from JP Luby and North Padre. Family-owned, dog-friendly, great brunch. Worth the stop.
Late afternoon: back to the casita. The propane grill is in the backyard. Stop at HEB on your way back — pick up Gulf shrimp, ask what came in that day. Grill them. Eat outside. This is the best meal of the weekend
Saturday evening: walk to the Downtown Marina Arts District. Coffee shops, galleries, street murals, and a bayfront that makes the city feel alive. McGee Beach is right there if you want to finish with your feet near the water.
After sunset, The Gold Fish Bar is four minutes from the casita for a proper Old Fashioned.
Sunday: The Slow Morning, Then the Drive Home
Sunday is for going slow. Make breakfast in the casita — eggs, coffee, nothing complicated. Eat on the porch if the morning is cool enough.
If you want something to sip on the way out, swing by The VINE Juice Company — drive-thru, cold-pressed juices and smoothies, 13 minutes from the casita. Celia's pick for a reset before a long drive.
If you haven't been to Padre Island yet, Sunday morning is your window — go early, drive the beach. If you've already done Padre, the South Texas Botanical Gardens are open Sunday mornings and beautifully uncrowded before noon. The butterfly house is worth the 20 minutes.
If You Have Time to Browse
Corpus Christi has a surprisingly good independent shopping scene. Crossroads Shopping Village (5 min) is the easy one: independent boutiques, local flavor, no chain-store pressure. Bleu Frog Mercantile (5 min) is a boutique gift shop worth a look. The Art Center of Corpus Christi (13 min) is an actual gallery and artisan market with original work by local artists — something worth bringing home.
For vintage: Antique Lane (6 min) and 20/20 Vintage (13 min) are both good. Wildflowers Emporium (13 min) covers the home-and-garden angle. If you want a full mall loop, La Palmera (10 min) has mainstream retail, or Lamar Park Center (6 min) for the boutique-mall-hybrid version.

Check out is at 11 am. Get one last cup from the casita kitchen before you go. Leave the place the way you found it — the guests who arrive after you deserve the same first hour you had.
